The Minister of Education and Culture reviews the revitalization of education at SMAN Pontianak

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti conducted a field review of the school revitalization program at SMAN 7 Pontianak in West Kalimantan on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The minister was accompanied by Acting Head of the West Kalimantan Provincial Education Office Syarif Faisal I Alkadri and school Principal Ibrahim during the inspection.

The visit comes as part of an ambitious nationwide initiative to upgrade educational infrastructure across Indonesia. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is implementing a revitalization program covering 343 schools in West Kalimantan during 2025 with a budget allocation of Rp424.19 billion, expanding to 943 schools in 2026 with a construction budget of Rp848.68 billion.

The West Kalimantan program forms part of a significantly larger national effort. In 2026, the ministry is targeting the revitalization of 71,744 schools nationwide with a total budget allocation of Rp14 trillion, approximately US$800 million. This represents a substantial expansion from 2025, when the program covered 16,167 schools across Indonesia with a budget of Rp16.9 trillion.

As of May 2026, the government had disbursed Rp2.6 trillion, about US$150 million, from the 2026 budget. The ministry has signed cooperation agreements with 4,838 schools, with 3,408 institutions already receiving assistance at the time of the minister's visit to Pontianak.

Self-Management Model and Local Impact

The revitalization program operates through a self-management scheme that grants schools authority to independently manage the construction process from planning through execution. This approach creates employment opportunities for local communities by engaging local residents in construction work and sourcing building materials from nearby suppliers, contributing to regional economic development.

The program prioritizes schools in three key categories: institutions with severe structural damage, schools in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions known as 3T areas, and schools affected by natural disasters. This targeting strategy aims to address educational equity by focusing resources on areas with the highest vulnerability and need.

Provincial Education Context

West Kalimantan's educational landscape reflects ongoing government investment in the sector. The province has a Human Development Index of 72.09, and the provincial government subsidized tuition for approximately 21,000 students at 274 high schools in 2025, demonstrating local commitment to educational access.

The revitalization effort in West Kalimantan can be compared with neighboring East Kalimantan, where 341 schools were deemed eligible to receive assistance in 2026 from 806 proposals submitted. In 2025, East Kalimantan saw 286 schools receive revitalization assistance with a budget allocation of Rp253.75 billion.

Minister Abdul Mu'ti, who was inaugurated on October 21, 2024, in President Prabowo Subianto's Red and White Cabinet, leads the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, which was formed in its current structure on the same date. The ministry previously operated as part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology before the recent governmental restructuring.
