KPJ Healthcare and SingHealth Forge Strategic Alliance to Advance Regional Healthcare Innovation
Malaysia's KPJ Healthcare and Singapore's SingHealth have signed a comprehensive partnership agreement focusing on clinical research, medical education, and healthcare innovation, marking a significant milestone in cross-border healthcare collaboration.
KPJ Healthcare and SingHealth Mark Strategic Partnership to Strengthen Future Healthcare Capabilities
KPJ Healthcare Berhad and SingHealth, Singapore's largest healthcare cluster, have formalized a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at Johor Specialist Hospital on August 10, 2026. The agreement establishes a long-term framework for collaboration spanning healthcare innovation, clinical research, medical education, and medical simulation.
The partnership unites KPJ Healthcare's extensive network of 30 hospitals across Malaysia with SingHealth's integrated system of four public hospitals, two community hospitals, five national specialty centres, and eight polyclinics. SingHealth, established in October 2000 as part of Singapore's public healthcare system reorganization, delivers care across more than 40 clinical and surgical specialties. Its flagship institution, Singapore General Hospital, traces its history to 1821.
Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, Chairman of the KPJHS Governing Council and President and Chief Executive of Johor Corporation, emphasized the collaborative approach underlying the partnership.

Professor London Lucien Ooi, Group Director of International Collaborations at SingHealth and Director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute, described the agreement as reflecting
a shared commitment to advancing healthcare innovation, clinical research, education and medical simulation for our communities.
Comprehensive Collaboration Framework
The MoU identifies five strategic pillars for cooperation: clinical education and workforce development, research and innovation, clinical collaboration, digital health and artificial intelligence, and knowledge exchange. Initial collaborative initiatives will include fellowship programs, specialist attachments, academic exchanges, joint research projects, scientific publications, healthcare leadership development, medical simulation training, and co-management of complex clinical cases.
For KPJ Healthcare, which introduced Malaysia's first private specialist hospital in Johor in 1981, the partnership supports the continued evolution of the KPJ Health System by accelerating integration of practice, education, research, and innovation through international collaboration. The Future Health Institute will serve as the strategic platform facilitating this integration and enabling partnerships with leading academic and clinical institutions worldwide.
KPJ Healthcare University, established in 1991 as a subsidiary of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, currently offers over 40 academic programmes across nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other healthcare disciplines, providing clinical training throughout KPJ's hospital network. This educational infrastructure positions KPJ to leverage the partnership's academic collaboration components effectively.
Regional Healthcare Integration Context
The partnership aligns with broader Malaysia-Singapore healthcare cooperation initiatives. Bilateral discussions in May 2026 focused on medical technology access, cross-border health tourism, and facilitating patient referrals from Singapore to private healthcare facilities in Johor. Cross-border healthcare integration between Singapore and Johor Bahru has expanded significantly, with private providers establishing coordinated care pathways for patients traveling between the regions.
KPJ Healthcare has demonstrated its capacity for international academic healthcare partnerships. In February 2024, KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital and Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 became the first Malaysian healthcare provider to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
The partnership benefits from strong institutional backing. Johor Corporation, established in 1968 as Johor's principal development institution and parent organization of KPJ Healthcare, maintains AAA corporate credit ratings from RAM Ratings, reaffirmed in 2024, with a net asset value of RM11.8 billion reported in 2025.
Professor Dato' Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid, Chief Medical Director of KPJ Healthcare, and Dr Nik Fawaz Nik Abdul Aziz, Chief Operating Officer for Group Allied & Retail Health Operations at KPJ Healthcare, participated in the signing ceremony alongside Professor Ooi and Vijaya Rao, Director of the International Collaboration Office at SingHealth.
KPJ Healthcare currently operates 30 hospitals and three Ambulatory Care Centres across Malaysia, serving 3.3 million patients annually with 1,491 medical consultants. Nineteen hospitals hold MSQH accreditation and four have achieved JCI accreditation. As Malaysia's first private healthcare provider to establish an Academic Health System, KPJHS integrates practice, education, research, and innovation. Beyond hospitals, KPJ Healthcare operates Klinik Waqaf An-Nur clinics, dialysis centres, and mobile clinics nationwide. The organization has been a constituent of the Bursa Malaysia FTSE4Good Index since 2016.
