Weichai Group celebrates 40 years in Vietnam with focus on green technology partnership

Weichai Group gathered nearly 400 global partners, overseas enterprise executives, and media representatives in Hanoi on July 22 for its 2026 Global Partners Conference, marking 40 years of operations in Vietnam and signaling deeper commitment to Southeast Asian markets.

The conference coincides with the 80th anniversary of Weichai, founded in 1946 in Weihai, Shandong Province, China. The industrial conglomerate now operates across more than 110 countries and regions, employing over 90,000 people worldwide and generating approximately $42 billion in annual revenue as of 2021.

Over four decades in Vietnam, Weichai has sold more than 160,000 power product units, maintaining market leadership in bus power solutions and marine power segments. The company has positioned itself as integral to local industrial development, accompanying Vietnamese customers through their business expansion.

Strategic timing amid market growth

The conference takes place as Vietnam's commercial vehicle market experiences significant expansion. The sector was valued at $2.53 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $5.80 billion by 2035, representing an 8.86% compound annual growth rate. First-quarter 2025 sales surged 37% year-over-year to 15,252 units, demonstrating strong market momentum.

Vietnam's electric bus segment shows particularly robust growth potential, with market value expected to jump from $50.64 million in 2024 to $139.94 million by 2030—an 18.46% annual growth rate. This expansion occurs within the broader ASEAN commercial vehicle market, estimated at $59.63 billion in 2025 and projected to reach $83.51 billion by 2030.

Alignment with national energy transition

Weichai's green technology focus aligns with Vietnam's revised Just Energy Transition Partnership plan approved in March 2026, which targets renewable energy accounting for approximately 47% of total installed power capacity by 2030. The country's electricity demand is projected to increase 8% annually between 2026 and 2030, driving substantial need for expanded power generation capacity.

Despite this transition, internal combustion engine vehicles currently dominate Vietnam's commercial vehicle market with over 80% market share in 2025, creating opportunities for Weichai's dual approach addressing both traditional and emerging technologies.

Partnership proposals and product showcase

Company representatives introduced three cooperation frameworks: collaborative innovation to advance green technology frontiers, market value creation through green products in local contexts, and strengthened mutual benefit through enhanced service delivery.

The conference featured comprehensive displays of Weichai's industrial chain capabilities, highlighting technological advantages in new energy, power and energy systems, and marine power. Product demonstrations included low-carbon intelligent complete vehicles, new energy commercial vehicles, and AsiaStar Bus models designed to meet green transformation and intelligent upgrading requirements across Southeast Asian markets.

Weichai emphasized its intention to use Vietnam as a strategic anchor for deepening Southeast Asian presence while advancing its global footprint, working alongside partners to explore markets and share development outcomes.
