Finance Minister Guides Press Through QSNCC Ahead of 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings

Thailand has completed preparations across all fronts to host the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas leading members of the press through the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center to showcase the venue's readiness for the global economic gathering scheduled for October 12-18, 2026.

The event marks Thailand's return as host after 35 years, having last welcomed the Annual Meetings in 1991. Following the standard rotation pattern where meetings are held for two consecutive years in Washington, D.C. and every third year in a member country, Bangkok joins recent overseas host cities including Marrakech, Morocco in 2023 and Bali, Indonesia in 2018.

Dr. Ekniti emphasized that hosting this gathering effectively brings the global headquarters of the IMF and World Bank Group from Washington, D.C. directly to Thailand. The government has integrated advanced technology and digital innovation while infusing distinctive Thai identity and culture into every aspect of the welcome.

World-Class Venue and Infrastructure

The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, originally constructed in 1991 and extensively renovated between April 2019 and September 2022, now offers 78,500 square meters of event space comprising eight exhibition halls, four plenary halls, four ballrooms, and fifty meeting rooms. The largest hall can accommodate up to 5,688 people in theater-style seating.

Venue operations have been elevated to international benchmarks with a state-of-the-art Master Control Room and broadcast transmission systems comparable to major global events like the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League. An elite team with direct operational experience from the World Economic Forum in Davos manages these systems.

Security and Logistics

Security measures implement the highest standards through coordination with the Royal Thai Police, featuring a multi-tiered zoning system with 17 X-ray checkpoints, 19 walk-through security gates, and integrated 24-hour CCTV surveillance. Dedicated security personnel are stationed around the clock across all 21 official delegate hotels.

Registration has exceeded 15,000 attendees from 191 member countries and continues to increase, bringing together policymakers, economists, government officials, private sector executives, and media representatives to jointly shape the direction of the global economy.

Economic Impact and Investment Opportunities

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that beyond generating an immediate economic injection of approximately THB 1.05 billion to 2.25 billion, the Annual Meetings position Thailand as a regional investment hub for future industries in Southeast Asia. The government will showcase readiness in digital infrastructure, clean energy, and investment incentives to attract Foreign Direct Investment into target industries such as Artificial Intelligence and Electric Vehicles.

Green Meeting Initiative

Dr. Vinit Visessuvanapoom, Director-General of the Fiscal Policy Office, highlighted the "Green Meeting" initiative, with Thailand and QSNCC committed to delivering an environmentally friendly conference. This includes providing over 320 electric vehicles for attendees, projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 95.8 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent, comparable to planting over 9,580 mature trees. Additional measures encompass circular waste management converting food waste into organic fertilizer, a paperless digital meeting system, and significantly reduced single-use plastics across all catering operations.

Thailand Pavilion and Cultural Showcase

The "Thailand Pavilion" exhibition organizes presentations into three core zones. The Digital Public Infrastructure zone presents advances including PromptPay, which launched in 2016-2017 and now serves over 82.9 million registered users, processing 2.38 billion transactions worth 4.45 trillion baht in May 2026 alone. Cross-border QR code payments and data-driven technologies helping local community shops and micro-entrepreneurs access financial services are also featured.

The Climate Resilience zone outlines approaches to mitigating climate change risks, from integrated flood management and data mapping for vulnerable groups to eco-tourism and low-carbon urban and community development. The Longevity zone showcases Thailand's healthcare system and wellness economy, covering Universal Health Coverage, the nationwide Village Health Volunteers network, functional health foods, bio-cosmetics, traditional Thai massage, precision medicine, and the broader wellness industry.

Thai Cultural Elements

Thai Soft Power and culture feature prominently through venue decor adorned with 40 traditional textile patterns from 28 communities across 21 provinces, including Tai Lue woven fabric, elephant-patterned Pha Khao Ma, and batik featuring the "Buppha Borom Rachineenart" pattern and Cattleya Queen Sirikit orchid designs. Two "Impact Piece" sculptures weave natural materials with indigenous craftsmanship to symbolize unity, cooperation, and sustainable progress.

The culinary program features certified Thai Geographical Indication products, allowing international delegates to experience distinctive local flavors through specially crafted items including "AM Brew" coffee made with premium Thai beans and "Thai Tea by QSNCC," prepared with high-quality domestic ingredients.

An honorary royal exhibition titled "The Royal Legacy: Building Resilience and Empowering People" reflects royal development philosophies that laid the foundation for Thailand's resilience and sustained improvement in quality of life, aligning with global priorities including sustainable development, inequality reduction, disaster response, and crisis management.

"This comprehensive readiness across the board proves that Thailand is ready to act as a gracious host in welcoming representatives from 191 countries worldwide, making the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings a historic forum connecting vision, innovation, new investment opportunities, and international cooperation together sustainably," Dr. Vinit concluded.

The meetings represent a significant milestone in the continuing rotation of the Annual Meetings, with the 2029 gatherings already scheduled for Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, marking the UAE's second time hosting after Dubai in 2003.
