Chang Thai Restaurant at Phuket Marriott Celebrates Thai Culinary Heritage Through Elephant-Inspired Dining

Chang Thai at Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach invites guests to experience Thailand's culinary traditions through a dining concept inspired by the elephant, the nation's most revered cultural symbol. The restaurant's approach honors the qualities of wisdom, strength and harmony that elephants represent in Thai culture.

Thailand officially declared the Asian elephant as the country's national animal in 2001, recognizing its deep significance to the monarchy, history and culture. In Buddhist tradition, elephants are revered as symbols of wisdom, strength and calm power, with their intelligence long associated with the enlightened Buddha, making them guardians of Earth. According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, approximately 3,000-3,500 wild elephants remain in Thailand, with a similar number of domesticated elephants.

Sustainability at the Core

Chang Thai's culinary philosophy mirrors the elephant's harmonious relationship with nature. The restaurant prioritizes sustainably grown herbs, responsibly farmed seafood and locally sourced produce from trusted Thai farmers. Each ingredient is selected to deliver authentic flavour while supporting environmental responsibility and local communities.

This commitment aligns with broader industry trends in Thailand, which has been the leading world exporter of shrimps for many years. Over 90% of Thai shrimp is cultured through aquaculture, with the government encouraging certification against national standards for sustainable shrimp farming.

A Menu Celebrating Thai Culinary Diversity

The restaurant's menu showcases Thailand's rich culinary heritage through three distinct categories. Famous Classics feature dishes that have introduced Thai cuisine globally, including Pad Thai, Tom Yum and Green Curry. Notably, Tom Yum Kung was officially inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024, becoming Thailand's fifth inscription on the list alongside Khon masked dance drama, Thai massage, Nora dance drama and Songkran festival.

Southern Inspirations capture the bold, vibrant character of southern Thailand with fiery curries and coastal specialties inspired by Phuket and the Andaman Sea. Signature Creations present modern interpretations that combine traditional flavours with contemporary culinary techniques, reflecting the balance of strength and grace embodied by elephants.

Dining in a Thriving Tourism Destination

The restaurant operates within Phuket's flourishing tourism landscape. The island welcomed approximately eight million visitors between January and July 2026, generating approximately 310.961 billion baht in tourism revenue. Phuket International Airport recorded its highest-ever daily numbers on February 14, 2026, handling 393 flights and 71,613 passengers in a single day, surpassing the previous 2019 peak. Tourism revenue for Phuket is projected to rise by 10% in 2026 to reach approximately 605 billion baht, according to the Phuket Tourist Association president.

Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach is located on Tri-Trang Beach, positioned 3 kilometers from Patong and 16 kilometers from Phuket Town, offering proximity to entertainment while maintaining a secluded beachfront setting. The resort provides a range of accommodation, dining experiences, swimming pools, spa facilities, recreational activities and event spaces.
