SynbioTech Targets Fast-Growing GLP-1 Companion Nutrition Market with TWK10® Probiotic at Vitafoods Asia

SynbioTech will present its Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TWK10® probiotic strain and microbiome contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) platform at Vitafoods Asia 2026, taking place September 2-4 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. The Taiwan-based biotechnology company is targeting the rapidly expanding GLP-1 companion nutrition market, which is projected to grow from approximately USD 3-5 billion in 2025 to USD 18-21 billion by 2035.

The company will exhibit at Booth H7-N32B during the event, which is expected to attract more than 13,000 attendees from over 80 countries with approximately 650 exhibitors, making it Asia's leading nutraceutical trade gathering.

Market Opportunity Beyond Appetite Control

As GLP-1-based therapies reshape weight management, nutrition companies are developing specialized products to address physiological challenges associated with these medications, including reduced appetite, decreased nutrient intake, potential lean muscle mass loss, and gastrointestinal discomfort. With approximately 11-18% of U.S. adults currently taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss and an estimated 40 million active users worldwide, the companion nutrition category has emerged as a distinct and fast-growing market segment.

Market research firms project the broader GLP-1 drug market will reach between USD 132 billion and USD 190 billion by 2035, up from a 2025 baseline of USD 52-94 billion. Morgan Stanley Research estimates the market could reach USD 190 billion by 2035, more than double its projected 2025 levels.

Major food and nutrition companies including Nestlé Health Science launched GLP-1 nutrition platforms in 2024, offering products focused on muscle preservation, gut health, micronutrient intake, and weight rebound management, signaling significant corporate investment in the category.

Clinical Evidence on Muscle Function and Protein Utilization

TWK10® has been studied for its role in the gut-muscle axis, the biological pathway through which gut microbiota and metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids can influence skeletal muscle metabolism, function, inflammation, and protein synthesis. Recent research on probiotics shows that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains can affect muscle health through multiple pathways including inflammation modulation, nutrient absorption, mitochondrial function support, and muscle protein synthesis promotion.

In a 28-day human study combining pea protein intake with resistance training, TWK10® increased peak blood concentrations of total branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) by approximately 6.9%, total essential amino acids (EAAs) by approximately 3.8%, and total amino acids by approximately 3.1% from baseline. The protein-only control group showed decreases in these measures. The study also observed outcomes related to gut microbiota modulation, muscle thickness, bench press one-repetition maximum, and anaerobic power.

An 18-week randomized, double-blind clinical trial involving frail older adults showed the high-dose TWK10® group achieved an approximately 13% increase in left-hand grip strength and an approximately 3% increase in relative muscle mass from baseline. The group demonstrated a 51% improvement in 30-second Chair Stand performance from baseline and reduced 3-meter Timed Up-and-Go performance time from 9.6 to 8.0 seconds, representing a 16.8% improvement.

The strain is supported by 27 scientific publications, nine human clinical studies, and 18 global patents. Its research foundation spans healthy adults, sports-nutrition populations, and older adults.

Regulatory Readiness Across Southeast Asian Markets

TWK10® has established regulatory approvals across multiple markets, including a Taiwan health claim for anti-fatigue, self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the United States, functional claim recognition in Korea, acceptance under Japan's Foods with Function Claims system, and MAL registration in Malaysia.

In Thailand, TWK10® was added to the approved edible microbial strain list in 2024, allowing Thai formulators to incorporate the strain without the additional substantiation pathway required for unapproved ingredients. Thailand's regulatory framework for probiotics underwent updates in 2024, with the Thai FDA assessing 268 proposed probiotic strains through a public consultation process that concluded in April 2024. Of these, 33 strains received approval for further consideration, 61 required additional evidence, and 174 were rejected.
