Suroso Replaces Darmawan Prasodjo as PLN President Director

PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia's state-owned electricity monopoly serving over 96 million customers, appointed Suroso as its new President Director during an Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The decision was announced by PLN President Commissioner Andi Arief following the virtual meeting held via Zoom starting at 6:30 PM.

Suroso replaces Darmawan Prasodjo, who has held the position since December 6, 2021, when he was promoted from Vice President Director. Darmawan, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) with a doctorate in natural resource economics, succeeded Zulkifli Zaini in that transition.

The meeting was attended by all board members, commissioners, and representatives from the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Body, reflecting the national policy significance of leadership changes at the 100% government-owned company that holds a monopoly on electricity distribution in Indonesia.

Suroso's Background and Experience

Suroso brings over 30 years of experience at PLN to the top position. He holds a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Institut Teknologi Bandung, completed in 2025, and has served in various strategic roles including Director of Risk Management from September 2023 to June 2025. Most recently, he has been serving as Director of Project Management and New Renewable Energy since June 2025.

Andi Arief indicated that Suroso will temporarily continue in his current directorate role until a replacement is appointed.

I am confident that Pak Suroso will continue the transformation,
he stated, expressing gratitude for Darmawan's contributions during his tenure.

Transformation Legacy

Under Darmawan Prasodjo's leadership, PLN achieved record-breaking financial performance for three consecutive years while initiating a major strategic shift from fossil-based to renewable energy sources. The company's 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Plan (RUPTL) targets 76% of new power generation capacity from renewable sources including solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal energy, representing a substantial increase from approximately 21 GW to 52.9 GW of renewable capacity.

The new President Director takes the helm as PLN implements its ambitious renewable energy roadmap under oversight from Danantara, Indonesia's second sovereign wealth fund established on February 24, 2025. With initial capital of $61 billion and modeled after Singapore's Temasek, Danantara manages seven major state-owned enterprises including PLN.

President Prabowo has mandated Danantara to accelerate PLN's transformation, with the sovereign wealth fund having signed a preliminary agreement with PLN in 2026 to speed up investment in renewable energy projects through PLN subsidiaries including PLN Nusantara Renewables and PLN Indonesia Power Renewables.

Suroso's appointment positions him to oversee the continuation of this energy transition strategy at a critical juncture for Indonesia's power sector, as the nation works to balance growing electricity demand with climate commitments and renewable energy targets.
