The annual BioShanghai Week opened on September 17 at Zhangjiang Science Hall, bringing together international stakeholders to advance collaboration in the biopharmaceutical sector through new partnerships with London and enhanced investment ecosystems.

BioShanghai Week 2026 Opens -- Joining Forces to Build a Global Biopharmaceutical Innovation Ecosystem
BioShanghai Week 2026 opened on September 17 at Zhangjiang Science Hall in Shanghai, launching a four-day gathering focused on building international collaboration in the biopharmaceutical industry. The event, themed "AI for Biopharma, Health for All," aims to connect global innovation resources and foster an open ecosystem for the sector.
The opening ceremony marked the establishment of the "Connect Globally: Shanghai–London Life Sciences Innovation Partnership," bringing together Chinese and British institutions including Zhangjiang Group, Shanghai Minhang Biomedical Industry Development Co., Ltd., Shanghai Jiading Industrial Zone Development (Group) Co., Ltd., London & Partners, Imperial College London, and Oxford University Innovation. This partnership will link London Life Sciences Week and BioShanghai Week to facilitate cross-border exchange of research capabilities, industry resources, and innovation platforms between China and the UK.
The event also unveiled the "Empower the Future: BioShanghai Investment and Financing Ecosystem Partnership," assembling domestic and international equity investment and financial institutions. Participating organizations include Shanghai Industrial Investment (Holdings) Co., Ltd., Shanghai State-owned Capital Investment Co., Ltd., Advantech Capital, CBC Group, Pudong Venture Capital Group, GL Ventures, HongShan, Jefferies Financial Group, Guotai Haitong Securities, New Alliance Capital, YUNION Healthcare Ventures, and Shanghai Hongsheng Capital. These partners will work to align capital with industry needs and build a biopharmaceutical capital ecosystem supporting companies throughout their development stages.
The venue for the event, Zhangjiang Pharma Valley, has established itself as a major international biopharmaceutical hub since its founding in 1992. The district now hosts operations of more than 1,700 biomedical companies, including multinational pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer, Roche, Novartis, and AstraZeneca. Spanning 220 square kilometers, Zhangjiang Science City benefits from strategic positioning 26 kilometers from Pudong International Airport and 37 kilometers from Hongqiao Transportation Hub.
Shanghai has designated biomedicine as one of three pillar industries for the city's development, alongside integrated circuits and artificial intelligence. Since 2021, Shanghai has achieved notable innovation milestones with 19 first-class innovative drugs and 25 innovative medical devices receiving marketing approval. The city has introduced comprehensive policies to accelerate development, review, and commercialization of innovative drugs and medical devices, including faster approval pathways for breakthrough therapies and support for WHO prequalification.
Growing Market and Global Integration
China's biopharmaceutical industry has experienced substantial expansion, with market size growing from RMB 1.21 trillion (USD 178.7 billion) in 2010 to RMB 2.97 trillion (USD 412.7 billion) in 2024. Between 2015 and 2025, the number of out-licensing deals from China increased dramatically by a factor of 31, from 5 to 157 deals, while the value surged by a factor of 54, from USD 2.5 billion to USD 135.7 billion.
The sector has also attracted significant academic talent, with approximately 30 percent of the world's top academic talent in biopharmaceuticals working in Chinese universities and laboratories between 2019 and 2023, compared to 27 percent in the United States and 12 percent in Europe. Looking ahead, innovative drugs in China are projected to outpace other pharmaceutical segments with annual growth of 20 percent between 2026 and 2030, before moderating to 8.8 percent from 2030 to 2040.
Event Structure and Activities
Running from September 17 to 20, BioShanghai Week 2026 follows a "1+5+1+1" framework comprising one opening ceremony, five thematic tracks, one exhibition with matchmaking sessions, and one Bio-Tour of industry sites. The event brings together entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, clinical principal investigators, and other stakeholders to address challenges in frontier technologies, research commercialization, industry collaboration, and business growth.
Activities are organized around five themes: Innovation Integration, Clinical Translation, Capital Empowerment, Ecosystem Services, and Coordinated Healthcare Development. To facilitate efficient resource connections, the event employs formats including "One Room One Topic" sessions, closed-door discussions, project roadshows, one-on-one meetings, and Bio-Tours.
The event positions itself as a global platform for cutting-edge biopharmaceutical technologies and a gateway for cross-border collaboration. By pairing BioShanghai Week with the Zhangjiang brand, organizers aim to enhance both the profile and market vitality of Zhangjiang Pharma Valley, creating an annual dealmaking summit that connects global capital with Chinese pharmaceutical innovation and facilitates market access for Chinese breakthroughs. These efforts support Shanghai's ambition to become the world's most supportive city for innovative drugs and medical devices.
Concurrent with the main event, the 2026 Jiading District Biopharmaceutical Industry Development Promotion Conference and the 2026 Minhang District Biopharmaceutical Ecosystem Promotion Conference were held to support Shanghai's development of high-end medical device industry clusters and help convert innovation resources and outcomes into commercial applications within the city.
