Independence Day renews commitment to justice, welfare: House Speaker

Indonesia's House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani emphasized the commemoration of the nation's 81st Independence Day as a pivotal moment for renewing collective commitment to national advancement and prosperity for all citizens.

"Eighty-one years of independence of the Republic of Indonesia represent a milestone for us to continue strengthening unity, safeguarding national sovereignty, upholding justice, and bringing prosperity to all Indonesian people," Maharani declared at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

The proclamation of independence, read by founding leaders Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta on August 17, 1945, marked the end of nearly 350 years of Dutch colonial rule. The government formalized the annual celebration by decree in 1946, establishing it as a national holiday.

Ceremony amid national mourning

This year's Independence Day observance carried particular solemnity following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara on August 15, claiming at least 68 lives and injuring more than 200 people. The disaster, which occurred at 5:58 a.m. local time near Nagekeo, also triggered tsunami waves reaching heights of 1.61 meters, prompting Level II tsunami warnings across four provinces including East and West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi.

The provincial government declared a 14-day emergency response period running from August 15 to 28 to accelerate relief operations and coordinate disaster management efforts.

Speaking at the ceremony attended by approximately 8,100 guests, Maharani underscored that the entire population shares responsibility for maintaining national integrity, while state officials bear the mandate to formulate policies that protect, prosper, and educate the people.

Call for unity and national priorities

The House Speaker called on the government and public to draw inspiration from this year's Independence Day theme, "A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia," in elevating development standards to improve welfare nationwide. She stressed the importance of placing national interests above personal ones to pave the way for more effective and equitable development across the archipelago.

Maharani, who was reelected as DPR Speaker for the 2024-2029 term on October 1, 2024, representing the PDI-P party which holds 110 seats in parliament, invited people of different ethnic groups and religions across Indonesia to work hand-in-hand in safeguarding unity and concord.

"With the spirit of cooperation, we continue moving toward a more advanced, stronger, and dignified Indonesia," she said, emphasizing that diversity should be embraced as a strength that binds the nation together.

Presidential participation and ceremonial displays

President Prabowo Subianto, who was inaugurated as Indonesia's eighth president on October 20, 2024, presided over the annual ceremony re-enacting the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Prabowo wore traditional attire comprising a blue tunic and matching trousers, complemented by a brown songket cloth and a black peci cap, while Gibran donned traditional black attire from East Nusa Tenggara.

The day before the main ceremony, President Prabowo led a national pilgrimage at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta on Sunday evening, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in Indonesia's struggle for independence.

The official celebration featured cultural performances, marching bands, and a procession carrying the heirloom national flag from the National Monument to Merdeka Palace. An aerial display showcasing Indonesia's military capabilities included around 81 aircraft and helicopters, among them F-16 and Sukhoi fighter jets, with the nation's newly acquired Rafale fighter jets making their public debut.
