President Prabowo Subianto's intensified foreign diplomacy has significantly elevated Indonesia's international standing and strengthened bilateral relationships worldwide, according to political analyst Bawono Kumoro from Indikator Politik Indonesia.
Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, Kumoro pointed to Prabowo's appearance as guest of honor at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday as evidence of Indonesia's rising global prominence. The forum, which drew more than 5,000 participants from over 70 countries and territories, with representatives from 80 nations confirming attendance, provided a major international platform for the Indonesian leader.
"Whether we like it or not, Indonesia under President Prabowo Subianto has become far more active internationally, making it increasingly respected by other countries," Kumoro stated.
The forum, held September 1-4 under the theme "The Far East: Development for the Benefit of the People," serves as Russia's primary platform for strengthening economic cooperation with Asia-Pacific nations through trade, investment, and energy partnerships. High-level delegations from China, India, Mongolia, Japan, and South Korea joined ASEAN member states at the event.
Strategic diplomatic frequency
Prabowo's visit to Vladivostok marked his second trip to Russia in 2026 and his fifth meeting with President Vladimir Putin since taking office as Indonesia's eighth president on October 20, 2024. This frequency of engagement underscores the deepening bilateral relationship between the two nations.
During his keynote address at the forum, Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to an independent and active foreign policy, emphasizing the country's determination to pursue national interests while contributing to global peace. He referenced Indonesia's attendance at the previous year's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum as an effort to build friendships, describing the current visit as focused on transforming those relationships into concrete outcomes.
Economic cooperation framework
The timing of Prabowo's appearance at the forum carries particular significance given recent progress in Indonesia-Russia economic relations. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately US$5 billion in 2025, representing a 21.7 percent increase from the previous year.
The economic partnership gained further momentum through the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement, signed in St. Petersburg on December 21, 2025. The agreement provides preferential terms for approximately 90 percent of commodities in bilateral trade and opens Indonesian access to a market of 183.7 million people with a combined GDP of US$3.04 trillion across EAEU member states, including Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Russia completed ratification of the FTA in May 2026 when Putin signed the enabling legislation, while Indonesia finalized parliamentary approval and Prabowo signed the presidential regulation of ratification in July 2026.
Strategic positioning in regional trade
Indonesia's engagement with the EAEU positions the country as a gateway connecting the Eurasian bloc to ASEAN's market of approximately 680 million people. As a member of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Indonesia occupies a strategic position in regional economic integration efforts.
Kumoro emphasized that Prabowo consistently brings strategic cooperation plans across various sectors during state visits, ensuring Indonesia's national interests receive effective international advocacy. At the Eastern Economic Forum, these agendas spanned defense and security, economic development, climate change, and other strategic areas.
"Indonesia's national interests are always brought by President Prabowo during state visits and international diplomacy, so they can be pursued more effectively internationally," the analyst noted.
The heightened international engagement not only raises Indonesia's global profile but also creates opportunities for the government to advance national priorities on the world stage, according to Kumoro's assessment.
