420-Meter Flood Wall Under Construction Along Tawing River in Trenggalek
A flood-control wall budgeted at more than Rp9 billion is under construction beside homes in Bendorejo Village, Trenggalek, East Java. The 420-meter project along the Tawing River is scheduled for completion by the end of December 2026.

Retaining wall beside a residential area
Antara Foto documented workers building the retaining wall on November 4, 2026. The structure runs along the riverbank directly next to a residential area and is intended to reduce the risk of rainy-season flooding when the Tawing overflows.
Repeated flooding in Bendorejo
Bendorejo, in Pogalan subdistrict, has experienced several floods in recent years. In May 2025, overflow from the Ngasinan River left water 100–150 cm deep in the village, VIVA Jatim reported. A village official estimated that about 3,200 households were affected.
An earlier flood in December 2024 struck Bendorejo and other communities across three subdistricts. The disaster affected nine villages and 4,311 households, or 12,532 people, according to figures from the Trenggalek disaster management agency, BPBD, reported by CNN Indonesia.
The Tawing itself overflowed after heavy rain in October 2022. Disaster authorities cited by FloodList reported flooding across 11 subdistricts in Trenggalek Regency, including Pogalan. The flood inundated 2,457 houses, affected 13,950 people and caused one death.
Flood-management proposals for the river system
The Tawing feeds into the Ngasinan River, as do the Tugu and Bagong rivers. A 2024 peer-reviewed study published in E3S Web of Conferences describes the Ngasinan as the Trenggalek area's main drainage and collector river.
To restore the Ngasinan's storage capacity and reduce flood discharge, the study recommended combining river normalization and embankment repairs with a residential drainage system and the construction of dams, reservoirs or retarding basins. Its recommendations named the Tugu, Bagong and Kampak dams.
The planned Kampak Dam would use the Tawing River at Karangrejo village in Kampak subdistrict, Trenggalek. The study describes a homogeneous fill-type dam with a planned body height of 66 meters, a crest width of 11.0 meters and a Q100 design flood discharge of 167.99 cubic meters per second. Its planned irrigation service area is 4,700 hectares.
